The Transformative Power of Art and Design

Wave Form

Like paintings, ocean waves are produced by a transfer of energy. Wind transfers energy to water. Artists transfer energy to color and form. This original mixed media painting was created with gouache, pastel, oil pastel, and charcoal combined with the energy of the Pacific Ocean.

Art transforms the energy of the spaces we live, work, and play. But did you know that our spaces can also transform a painting or print?

When you first see a painting or print, you tend to see it “as it is.” However, art is never as it is. We’re constantly pairing it with something else – from the frame we choose to the perfect place we find for it in our home.

When you look at a painting on its own, it can be hard to imagine its power.

As a reference for those times when you can’t try it before you buy it, I wanted to give you an example of how a painting or print can transform (or be transformed by!) different kinds of living environments.

Let’s take a look!

Casual Living Room

Urban Loft

In the first photo Wave Form is framed in warm wood. It blends with its casual traditional environment in a very comfortable way. The print tells a much edgier story in the modern Urban Loft environment. The sea even looks more tumultuous as the darker colors of the art tend to stand out when framed in/paired with high contrast black and white.

Cozy Beachfront Cottage

Formal Living Room

While Wave Form works in both the cozy beachfront and the formal living room environments, I find myself thinking about the art differently in each location. The art print feels more “bright and fun splashing in the surf” in the beach house setting, while the traditional home makes me think of the more uncontrollable aspects of the sea during an eventful sailing voyage.

Land + Sea

Cool shades of gray and white gives Wave Form quite a different tone than the same print housed in a warmer, more natural environment.

I hope these comparisons of Wave Form were helpful and fun! I enjoyed putting them together and seeing how powerful art can be. If you have any art dilemmas that need solutions for, send me an email! I may not be able to help, but maybe I know someone who can. Xoxo
