The Beckoning of Lovely
Amy Krouse Rosenthal is…how shall I put this? Awesome.
My first exposure to Amy’s work was a birthday gift from my fantastic friend and Give It A Whirl contributor, Courtney. She gave me a copy of Amy’s amazing book, Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life. Want to read an excerpt?
Amy also writes children’s books. I love her Little Books series, illustrated by Jen Corace, and Spoon, illustrated by Scott Magoon.
The project that I’m excited about right now is The Beckoning of Lovely, a film that will be released on YouTube on 11/11/11. It’s been described as an “interactive love letter to the universe,” and you can bet I’ll be there on opening day.

Andie and Christian’s Engagement Photos by Jaquilyn and Travis Shumate
When I was visiting the lovely blog Neatloaf by my new friends Andie and Emily at Assemble Gallery & Studio, I had the pleasure of seeing Andie and Christian’s gorgeous engagement photos shot at the Puyallup Fair.
Their photos were taken by the super talented Tacoma based team of Jaquilyn and Travis Shumate. Absolutely gorgeous.

The Sketchbook Project
I read about The Sketchbook Project a while ago, and I was intrigued. Not enough to commit to the project then, but enough to go back and visit the site a few more times and finally join their 2012 project. I think what finally made me say, “I absolutely have to do this,” was one of the theme choices.
That’s right, friends. The theme for my sketchbook is Time Traveler. That means I get to spend artistic time immersed in one of my biggest obsessions. My plan is to use my sketchbook as inspiration for the series of time travel novels that I’m about to start writing. Depending on how the pages turn out, I may incorporate some of them into the actual manuscript.
If you’re interested in following my progress, you can check out my official Sketchbook Project page or follow the work in progress on my new Tumblr site, Inward Facing Girl | Studio.
My Cat Sucks
Unfortunately, one of my obsessions this week is how much my cat sucks.
Some of you who follow me on Twitter may remember me tweeting about my cat repeatedly waking me up at four or five in the morning, demanding to be fed. No problem. Just ignore her, right? Wrong. Bella (she’s pre-Twilight by the way, a real trendsetter) has a very annoying meow that get louder the further I shove my head under the pillow.
Maybe I could deal with it if I was the only one affected, but it gets worse. Sometimes she heads over to my son’s door and starts pawing on it. If he wakes up, then she can guarantee I’ll get up. Then I get to start my day with an obnoxious cat and a tired 15-month-old before I’ve even had any coffee. Who’s the real Sucklord, I ask?
So, since we can’t free feed her because of weight issues, we decided to try locking up her meals in a feeder and letting “the machine” be responsible for giving her food, rather than me. At 5:00 AM. Every day. Even when my son sleeps until 7:00 AM.
For the first week or so, it worked like a charm. Bella even started waiting by the bowl in the mornings, rather than coming into our bedroom. One day I even “slept in” until 7:20 AM! It was a magical time.
Then the freak figured out how to break into the food bowls and started having breakfast at 12:30 AM. I tried a few things to deter her.
But alas, nothing worked.
She fights and fights with it until she’s able to somehow stick her paws in and open the damned thing with the timer still set. Sigh. Smart and determined little monster.
And, note to PetSafe: WTF?!?!
I guess you get what you pay for. Now we have to upgrade. Sigh. Here’s hoping we’ll get some sleep soon.
