One of the things that I wanted to do when I committed to One Creative Summer was to start reading actual books again. For most of my life I’ve been reading at least one novel, but when I started REALLY getting into blogging I basically stopped reading fiction and books in general.
Last summer I read a couple of books on my list, but this year I’m already ahead of the game. In the past month I’ve read four books! You have no idea how excited this makes me. I’ve enjoyed it so much. So far I’ve read two non-fiction books and two novels: The Next Best Thing by Jennifer Weiner (yes, I was “supposed” to read it last summer), I’m Nobody! Who Are You by Mary Anderson, Manage Your Day-to-Day: Build Routine, Find Your Focus and Sharpen Your Creative Mind from 99u, and Making Your Creative Mark by Eric Maisel. This week I started The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer. I’m only a few pages in so far but I think I’m really going to like this one. I’m also leafing through a bunch of library books on creativity.
Since I’ve started focusing on using my time more productively, I’ve been able to fit in so many of the things that I love to do and have lost nothing in the process. In fact, I’m gaining so much more.
Some of the books on creativity that I’m reading this summer are part of the research I’m doing for a book proposal. An added benefit is that they’re igniting all kinds of new ideas for blog posts, newsletters, future workbooks, and creative plans for my clients. So it’s a win-win-win!
I’ve been using my iPad a lot more lately, for reading and sketching. I created the obsession graphic for my Funny Face post on it and I’ve been using it to check out and read some of my library books. Thanks to a timely little gift from The Snugg last week, working on it has become much more comfortable. I’d been getting really annoyed with my Apple cover. I can’t tell you how many times it has detached itself from my iPad while I’ve been reading. Plus the lack of a comfy hand strap on the back has caused me to literally drop my iPad ON MY FACE while trying to read lying down. But my new case has a hand strap on the back, so now I’m safe. :)
What are you guys reading this summer? My plan is to always be reading a novel, no matter what kind of non-fiction stuff I’m looking through too. AfterThe Interestings I’ll be reading a YA series from my teenage years! More on that later.
Tonight I’m going to an event that I’ll tell you more about next week. Here’s a hint: I FINALLY get to meet Jonathan Adler!
I hope you guys have a great weekend! I want to go swimming at some point. What about you?
