InstaAwesome: World Traveler Miss Jess Rose Captures the Art of Burning Man

I never intended to spotlight one person in my InstaAwesome column, but this week I couldn’t help myself.

The first time I heard about Burning Man was when I received a postcard from my friend Kerry who had moved away from Louisiana to go live with the “crazy Californians.” The front of the postcard was a photograph of her and her friends covered in latex body paint in various shades of the rainbow, standing one after another in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. I was intrigued, but I didn’t get it.

It was 1995ish. There were no smartphones, and homes with internet connections were not the norm. My roommate had Windows 95 (At MOST! Maybe it was 3-something) and we used her computer to play solitaire and write papers. I was 25ish-years-old, had never lived anywhere else, and hadn’t traveled much. If I wanted to learn about Burning Man, I would have basically had to go to the library and ask about it, and I’m almost positive I would have still walked away empty handed.

Now I get it.  And so does the super talented Jessica Rose Yurasek, aka @missjessrose on Instagram.

Jessica left her cubicle and began her journey around the world in October 2012. You can see more of her Burning Man Instagrams and keep up with her travels through her beautifully documented photographs on her inspiring blog
