1. LUSH
I think the first thing I ever tried by LUSH was one of their yummy smelling bath bombs. After that, my then boyfriend now husband somehow managed to convince me that traditional antiperspirants were the devil’s work, so I threw out my Secret and replaced it with a bar of hippie scented non-evil deodorant.

Recently I stopped by the delicious smelling (seriously, you can smell it outside the store) downtown Seattle location to pick up said hippie deodorant for my husband and walked out with a sample of R&B hair treatment/leave-in conditioner. This stuff smells so good and my hair feels so soft when I use it.

This week, I returned to buy my own full-sized R&B and left with samples of Soak and Float (gotta love having a flaky scalp…sigh) and King of the Mods. Soak and Float is weird because it smells like a campfire while you’re using it. Luckily for everyone who likes to sniff my hair, the smoky scent seems to wash away during rinsing. Plus, if you’re following up with orange blossomy R&B and citrusy King of the Mods, it doesn’t matter anyway.

Besides their products and how the store smells, another thing that I love about LUSH is the employees. Those people know their products inside and out. If you have a specific issue or a certain kind of product in mind, they’ll help you find exactly what you need. And they’re generous with the samples, always a plus. Supposedly the shampoo that I got this week will last for two or three months.

So, if you’re lucky enough to have a LUSH store in your town, go check it out. They’re awesome sauce.

2. The Art of Getting By
If you can tear yourself away from my witticisms, take two minutes and 24 seconds to watch the trailer for The Art of Getting By. It looks fantastic.

3. Thunderpants
Even though I’m definitely obsessed with Thunderpants (or “Thundies” as they’re called in the US), I debated including them in my list. I mean, I didn’t really want to share what kind of underwear I like with the world, but I honestly felt like I would be doing my gal pals who are looking for cool funky underwear that “won’t go up your bum!”a disservice if I didn’t include these on my list.

The good news:

  • They won’t “go up your bum!”
  • If you live in Portland and want the hipster style, you can visit the cool little boutique Radish Underground and buy them.
  • They come in the coolest patterns ever. Here are some examples.
Love and Robots
Chocolate Rockets
Stripey Owls

The bad news: If you want the “Original” style, you’ll have to order them from New Zealand.

You’re welcome.

4. Spring/Summer Plans

This is going to be one of the best spring/summers ever! We have a lot of things planned.

Next week we’re heading to St. Louis to visit Drew’s family and introduce Nathaniel to his uncle, aunt, and cousins.
In early June we’re going to Los Angeles to see the Art in the Streets exhibit at MOCA, see some friends, and go to some of our favorite placesWe’re going to take the train up to Vancouver in mid-June to celebrate my adorable husband’s birthday. My super awesome friend Barbara is coming to visit from Germany in July. Nathaniel‘s first birthday is in August (OMG, he’s going to be one soon!), and my parents are going to come up and visit. Also in August my friends from Austin are going to be in Portland, so we’re going to drive down and meet them for a long weekend.

WOWOWOWOW!!!!!
I don’t think I’ve ever had this much fun stuff to do in one spring/summer.

5.
The Graffiti Coloring Book from Fred Flare
Once upon a time, I was hip and cool and I subscribed to NYLON. I loved that magazine so much. Not as much as Tiger Beat or Sassy, but still true love.

Anyway, recently I downloaded Zinio so I could read magazines on my iPad. When I set up my Zinio account I was allowed to pick three free issues of a single magazine, so I chose NYLON. At least I can pretend to be hip and cool for three months, right? Then I was like, I should check out NYLON‘s Twitter account and see what’s up there.

And that, my friends, is how I learned about The Graffiti Coloring Book from Fred Flare.

It’s sold out now, but more are expected on May 16th. Maybe I’ll order these sunglasses too.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a pair of candy apple red heart-shaped sunglasses. And that’s just sad. I think they’d be perfect for my summer of travel.

XOXO,
Melanie
