Way back before the internet and severe warnings of skin cancer existed, my friends and I spent every summer lounging by the pool slathering ourselves with Coppertone and listening to pop songs by The Go-Gos, Wham!, Madonna, and Blondie. I still remember how it felt to float around flipping through Seventeen magazine and waiting (that’s right, waiting) for our favorite song of the moment to be played on the radio.
The Poolside abstract painting series is inspired by those long, lazy days of summer – the music, the fake coconut smell, feeling of floating and weightlessness, and the poppy 80s color palettes. It’s part of my history that contributes to my need to be in or near water and my obsession with southern California, long before I ever visited or lived there.
