I’ve been enjoying my mini mood board art direction collaboration with Nancy Herrmann so much that I’ve decided to start another image coupling column. I’ve always liked the “this and that” posts on blogs where the author explores the pairings of different objects, styles, etc. Separated at Birth on SFGirlbyBay is my favorite. Victoria always has interesting themes and stunning images.
This month’s W Magazine solidified an idea that has been swimming around my brain since last fall. I think it would be a fun challenge to pair art with “objects.” Objects is the x in the algebra equation where Art is the known – There will definitely be a piece of art in every pairing, but the types of things (or people or places or…) that I use in this exercise in art direction and visual storytelling will always change.
This week is fun because the art that I’m using is from someone I know personally and love. Jaime Derringer is a talented artist and the editor in chief of the cutting edge contemporary design website, Design Milk. Jaime’s colorful abstract, geometric pieces never disappoint. Untitled 2 is one of my favorites – the shapes, textures, and color palette are stunning. When I saw this photo of one of Proenza Schouler‘s Spring/Summer 2014 looks, I thought it was a great compliment to Jaime’s piece.
For this debut post I’m stopping with two images, but there may be full mood boards in the future. Whatever I’m feeling that day!
