My very last piece of editorial art for the Creating Your Own Path 2017 Artist Residency was published last month. I loved being Jennifer’s very first artist resident and I miss working with her already!
I’d like to share all of the editorial illustrations I created, starting with the first one right here. This is the piece I painted and hand lettered for my first interview on Creating Your Own Path – “If you don’t like it, turn the page.” I’m pretty sure that I was referring to my sketchbook or creative process during the interview, but this quote has really been my philosophy on life in a lot of ways. Funny how you don’t realize things like this until you look backwards. As in life, in art, as in art, in life?
Man, I’m ON FIRE with these quotes today! Let’s quote it up!
Melanie served as the first-ever Creating Your Own Path Artist Resident during the 2017 season and working with her was a dream. Not only did she work effectively and efficiently, but she also took great efforts to help drive the creative vision for the show, the residency, and the physical products that would be created from her work. I truly hope to work with Melanie again sometime in the future!
Here are the rest of the illustrations in the order I created them. I started working on these in March and finished the last one in September. It’s cool to see the progression.
If I could do this editorial art project again and know what I know now (aka, this can’t be done until my next multiple illustration project), I would have spent more time planning what the illustrations should look like as a series. The podcasts were being recorded along the way, and initially I thought it would be helpful to know what the pull quotes were before planning the design elements. Looking back now, I could have done it either way.
I also would have used the digital collage method that I started using near the end for all of the pieces – I loved working with bits and pieces of physical paintings put together in entirely new ways! I’m planning to do some physical/digital collages for my Society6 and Redbubble shops using this method, including some hand lettered versions of helpful and inspirational phrases that I’ve been using in my own brain lately. Maybe even before Christmas…hah…hah hah hah! …we’ll see.
If you’re interested in purchasing any of the prints or products from the artist residency, you’re in luck! Check out Jennifer Snyder’s online shop to purchase any or all of the designs I created for the podcast. Thank you so much, Jennifer! I loved working with you.

Okay, now I’m going to drink more coffee and watch last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Yes, I still watch that show. Unless it wasn’t on or something. Right now I don’t know so I can pretend like I’m going to settle into my comfy sofa and blanket with my delicious greek yogurt, lemon curd, blueberry, homemade granola breakfast and steaming mug of coffee and enjoy the antics of the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial (aka Seattle Grace). Right now is a magical time where this possibility still exists. OMG I feel another quote coming on…Live in the Possibility. Seriously, guys that is going on something somewhere.
Have a great weekend! xoxo
