I’ve already written about Elle Luna, her amazing book The Crossroads of Should and Must, and #The100DayProject, her inspiring collaboration with The Great Discontent, so I won’t say too much about it today. Participating in the project (with #100GraphicPatterns) has made daily art making a habit, craving, and necessity for me, and I’m eternally grateful for the inspiration.
I’ve decided to start new projects based around creative skills that I want to improve. I’m not ready to commit to another 100 days of anything just yet, so I’m starting with #30Daysof3. I’m using #30Daysof3 to work on my artistic editing skills. Although I’ve gotten much better at not cramming every idea that I have into one work of art, I still need to practice pulling back more when I’m creating a painting, drawing, or collage.
During the next 30 days I will create one piece of art each day using just three elements. Like my #100GraphicPatterns project, some of these will completely suck, and if I’m lucky I’ll even love a few of them. Note: I do not love today’s experiment…and that’s okay.
#30Daysof3 Day 1
Today I created a collage using pink Prismacolor Nupastel, metallic gold paper, and part of an image from a magazine. I decided to feature it two different ways in the photographs below, just for kicks.
I’m excited to see what the progression will look like when I reach Day 30!
Here’s an example of my work that I actually do love where artistic restraint paid off.
Shades of Pale is one of the collages that I created last year in an abstract composition workshop. It’s made from just three pieces of paper, but it makes a powerful statement. I’m not quite sure how I was able to stop myself from adding “just one more” element to the page, but I did, and I love the simple, elegant results.
P.S. If you’d like a print of this piece, you can You can purchase it here.
