The Wave | Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Melanie Biehle
Vacation time is here, and we couldn’t be more ready.
This afternoon the Adventure Club will hop on a plane to Reykjavík. The first place we go after we land is the Blue Lagoon. We wouldn’t have planned on going right away but since we land at 6:30 AM and our Airbnb won’t be ready until later, we decided to go with it.
This is pretty much our motto when we travel. We don’t plan out tons of activities and must-sees. We’d rather get up in the morning, ease into our day, and see where it takes us. Sure, we have guidebooks and we read up on where we’ll be, but that never leads to a detailed itinerary. Our favorite thing to do, no matter where we are, is to visit different neighborhoods and browse local shops, drink coffee, see some art, eat tasty treats (preferably those that are local to the area), and walk around to see what we can see. We like to immerse ourselves in where we are rather than stand in long lines for popular tourist attractions.
I’m so happy that we get to take Nathaniel on this trip. I didn’t travel much or far when I was a kid. I was 20 years old before I even stepped foot on an airplane. Nathaniel was four months old when he flew for the first time. He’s a great traveler and he’s really excited about the trip. It’s so much fun to watch.
By the way, this kid turned five last week. FIVE! I love that our Pacific Northwest son chose to go kayaking on his birthday. It was his first time (and only our second!). He loved it. Like me, he’s super happy when he’s in or near water. He literally squeals at times.
A few other updates before we head out…
I have a new monthly column over at Coco+Kelley. Art Direction will introduce you to talented artists by using their work as a jumping off point for each post. Sometimes you’ll get a mood board based on the artwork of a single artist, other times you might get living spaces or travel adventures. You just never know…except for art. You’ll definitely get art.
I just wrapped my second photo shoot for LUXE magazine. You can check out the first one here.
I’m working on some brand new artwork that I’m really excited about. I’ve closed my online shop while I’m traveling, but come September there will be a lot of new original pieces (including my poolside series) and limited edition prints for sale. Sign up for my mailing list to learn about new work when it’s available.
I’m still working on #100DaysofGraphicPatterns on Instagram. Most of these are quick, spur-of-the-moment sketches. After I’m done with this project I’ll be going through all of the photographs I’ve taken and specimens I’ve collected on our many beach walks and will be producing a bunch of new abstract drawings and paintings based on those. So excited to get started!
If you’re hoping to book a one-on-one Brand Exploration + Content Strategy service, I only have three or four spots left through the end of 2015. Email me if you’d like to reserve a space and I’ll respond with more info when I can. I’ll be booking on a first come, first served basis. The next available start date for a session is September 28th.
Okay…I think that’s it. Check in with me on Instagram if you’d like to follow our adventures through Iceland and Germany for the rest of the month. I hope that you’re enjoying your summer! Be present and soak up every single minute of it. xoxo
