We Are The Contributors #3: Alter Ego

Our third We Are The Contributors project has been published! The contributions for our Alter Ego theme include collages, illustration, photo essays, a mini-magazine, a dance, essays, mixed media, and hand lettering. There are some amazing projects by some super talented creative women. Please go and take look and share it with your friends!

There’s also a new blog post about the future of our We Are The Contributors collaboration. It’s been fun seeing all this amazing work come in over the past six months. That was one of my favorite parts and I will miss it. The other two parts I loved most were creating my own work for each Contributor project and designing the covers for them.

I’ve learned a lot during this brief time working on We Are The Contributors. The main thing is that I’m not really interested in doing something that I once thought would be a dream job.

Life Lesson: I don’t want to publish a quarterly magazine.

I’m sure it would be different if I had a staff of people behind me, but being responsible for the details of so many different parts of getting issues put together is not something I want to be part of.

Alter Ego: Sofia Coppola by Melanie Biehle for We Are The Contributors

Life Lesson: I want to create. I don’t want to manage.

I am planning to create some mini-magazines like this one that I did for Alter Ego. I made some disposable collages for it – meaning I didn’t glue them down. I just put them together for the photographs then put all the pieces back in my paper collection. You can flip through the publication magazine-style on ISSUU. The direction that I’m going creatively (which I’ll share more about here really soon) is going to be using collage and abstract painting to tell editorial and commercial stories. I’m excited about the future and also about sharing more of my work and the things, people, and places I’m inspired by here on this site.
Alter-Ego-by-Melanie-Biehle-WATC-FINAL-SINGLE-PAGES-6I’ll be back soon to write about my professional changes, what brought them about, some of the things I’ve been stuck on, and why I’ve rebranded from Inward Facing Girl to Melanie Biehle. I hope that sharing some of my process behind the changes can help some of you who may be struggling to find your creative place in this huge, huge world. xoxo

Bonus fact: Sofia Coppola guest edited a special supplement to the May issue of W Magazine!
