One of the first things that I did yesterday was watch Todd Selby‘s film about artisan, painter, organic dyer, and gardener Audrey Louise Reynolds. Audrey is featured in Todd’s newest book, Fashionable Selby, and is one of the artists that I bookmarked to look up later.
“I work with color.” – Audrey Louise Reynolds
Some of the interesting materials that Audrey uses to create her one-of-a-kind dyes include bioluminescent plankton, squid ink, rust, home-grown crystals, flowers, and insects. She has collaborated with brands like Pamela Love, Nomia, Assembly New York, Repetto, No.6, Kaelen, The Elder Statesman, and Nike.
One of the best things we can do to inspire ourselves creatively is to step outside of the boundaries we’ve given ourselves. That includes our typical go-to creative inspiration sources.
Watching Audrey Louise Reynolds rub plants on fabrics to transfer color and paint with squid ink was so inspiring to me because it felt so far beyond my realm of mixing acrylic paint.
Making time for inspiration is part of being a working creative.
Take six minutes out of your busy day to watch this film. The effect that it has on your creativity could be worth way more than what you could have checked off your to-do list in that same amount of your valuable time.
