Cuckoo Clock Case Study | Lilla Rogers Make Art That Sells Class Assignment 1

One of the things that I’m doing this year to improve my design skills and further build my graphic design portfolio is taking the Lilla Rogers Studio Assignment Bootcamp Class. The first assignment was to design an iPhone case that included a cuckoo clock element. If you know me at all, you know that I’m in no way a traditional cuckoo clock type of person. The ornate details (and the noise!) would drive me insane. So I asked myself, if I had a cuckoo clock what kind of house would the little bird live in? A mid-century modern Case Study House, naturally.

I started with a million preliminary sketches in pencil, then scanned my favorite of the bunch into Adobe Illustrator.

In the end, I didn’t end up using the sketch. Instead I created a new design loosely based on the original. But I think that making all those sketches by hand helped me work through the creative process of getting the design that was in my head to match the one that I ended up with. Here’s the final version of Cuckoo Clock Case Study.

I’m really happy with the way it turned out, and I learned so much during the process. The class gallery will go live at the end of February, then we’ll get our March assignment. I can’t wait to see what our next challenge will be!
