This week I’m working on finishing up The First Steps of Hand Lettering: Concept to Sketch. My project is called “How To Be” and I’m creating it for an ongoing writing/art series that will start next month or early 2014. Each writing/art piece will focus on a different topic, so I want the “How To Be” text to be very strong, modern, and simple and I want to use a mix of collage elements and white space as the background.

Here are the beginnings where I experiment with how it feels to draw letters, what works, and what doesn’t work.
Later I start to narrow down how I’d like the finished piece to look.

I still have some work to do on this project once I scan and vectorize it. Here’s the piece with the collage elements as it stands now.
