Art Museum Family Time

I am so lucky. My child enjoys going to art museums! You should see him. He walks around inspecting everything and asks questions. Most of the questions these days are centered around, “Why is she naked?”

“Because the human body is beautiful and that’s the way the artist painted her.”

Note: Nathaniel is NOT naked in the photo above. He’s donning the requisite art garb of fireman’s hat, pirate cape, and frog rain boots.

On this rainy Sunday we met my cousin Michael at the Frye Art Museum here in Seattle. Charles and Emma Frye, avid art collectors and supporters, gifted their collection to the people of Seattle, which became the Founding Collection for the museum.

I loved the blend of new and old in the Frye Salon. Mark Mitchell’s Burial is displayed right in the center of the Founding Collection as it was originally installed in Charles and Emma Frye’s home gallery.

I loved the pieces by Buster Simpson who’s described as, “a pioneer in the field of urban environmentalism and art in public spaces.” Even the way that the art labels were created was interesting.

I didn’t know anything about Buster Simpson until that day, and I just noticed that the Frye has a walking map of his public art around Seattle. Time for a field trip!

We started taking Nathaniel to see art when he was about three weeks old. His first exhibition was an outdoor sculpture show, MadArt in the Park.  He’s been to museums and galleries in Seattle, Bellevue, Bellingham, Portland, Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin, St. Louis, and Monroe, LA.

Visiting art museums is one of my very favorite things to do in the whole world. I always walk out feeling calm, energized, and inspired. I love that it’s something that I can share with my family.
