“Tell me about your creative coaching process. What’s that like?”
This is one of the questions I often get asked by potential clients (even when I temporarily discontinued the service), so today I’m going to demystify the process and show you how it works.
The people who hire me for creative coaching usually fall into one of two categories:
OVERWHELMED CREATIVE
Primary Issue: Lack of Focus
“Too much” inspiration | Believes in her ability, but can’t stay off Twitter | Tends to jump from project to project
UNINSPIRED CREATIVE
Primary Issue: Lack of Motivation
“No” creative ideas, often due to self-doubt or anxiety over part of the creative process | Low confidence | Doesn’t usually believe that the thing she wants most can be achieved
While on the surface these look like opposite issues, the way I help my clients through each of them is similar.
The OVERWHELMED CREATIVE struggles through the day-to-day because she has so many different things that she wants to do.
She wants to create and sell her watercolor paintings, write a horror screenplay, and teach after-school music lessons to first graders. Her mind bounces from one interest to another, rarely leaving any time to focus her energy in a way that is conducive to making much progress on or completing projects. While she does manage to pull it together to get some work done, you’ll find all kinds of files and folders on her computer and in her office, a jumbled disarray of projects she’s been extremely passionate about but has yet to finish.
I help the Overwhelmed Creative EXPLORE her possibilities and options, STRUCTURE and prioritize her projects, and set a clear FOCUS for accomplishing what’s most important to her.
The UNINSPIRED CREATIVE is stuck in a completely different way. Rather than having too many projects cluttering up her mind, she draws a blank every time she starts to work on her blog, artwork, or photography.
It’s been a while since she’s felt really motivated or excited about her work, and while she may have experienced some wins in the past, her confidence is shot. She’s lost her way, if she ever had it in the first place. While there’s still a creative spark within her, it’s lost it’s light and requires exploration and confidence-building exercises to get it back.
I help the Uninspired Creative EXPLORE her past and present and acknowledging her successes, BUILD her confidence by setting specific action steps for personal and professional growth, and creating a plan to help her FOCUS on the opportunities she’s most interested in and the steps she needs to take to get them.
Getting Started
As I describe on my Work With Me page, just click here to schedule your first session. After that, I’ll send you my Creative Coaching questions that will help me get to know you better so our time together will be as productive as possible. My questions are also designed to help you start getting more clear on your own creative priorities. The $350 fee includes two one-hour phone or Skype coaching sessions and an action plan to help you start living the productive, creative life you want most. If you need additional single sessions, they will be available for a lower rate.
Whew.
I think I covered just about everything, but please let me know if you have any questions about this service. It’s one of the things that I love most about what I do. It’s cool to combine my psychology background, creative skills, and super freaky organization obsessions to come up with unique customized plans for the type of people I like working with most of all.
I hope you guys have a great weekend! I’m taking off for the deep south later next week, but I’ll check in before I leave. xo
