Friday Focus: Magazines for Inspiration

This week I posted a photo on Instagram of some magazines that I was looking through to get inspired for a new visual identity project I’m working on. The lovely Kerri Jones from TenThings Jewelry asked me what some of my favorite magazines are for inspiration, so I decided to turn her question into a Friday Focus list!

In no particular order, here are some for you to check out this weekend.

Computer Arts Collection  – This is the second year of this fantastic series from Computer Arts magazine. Each of the six issues tackles a different aspect of design – illustration, photography, branding, graphic design, advertising, and typography. It’s freaking amazing and full of design inspiration.

UPPERCASE – Janine Vangool’s Canadian quarterly for “creative and curious” types never ceases to inspire me. Fantastic themes, interesting art, and great interviews are what keep me coming back to my collection over and over again. Dear Janine – Will you please send me issues 1 – 7 from your secret stash? I know you have one. Erin? Erin Bacon! Do you hear me?

Kinfolk  – I’m afraid my regular readers might self-implode from eye rolling if I say anything else about this magazine on this blog. If you’re new here, just click the link. Shutting up now…

NYLON  – An old favorite. I’ve been a subscriber off and on for years. I’m on again right now even though it’s really for people 20 years younger than me. But hey, the music and graphic design inspiration that I get makes it still “for me” even if it isn’t for me from a marketing standpoint. I mean really…was Gossip Girl made for me? Who cares? It’s ALL for me! I miss that show.

Anthology – I love seeing where creative people live and work and I always get a chance to do that when my issue of this San Francisco quarterly arrives in my mailbox.

Here are three magazines that I’m just getting to know: Aesthetica , Wayfare, and Flow. I already love what I’m seeing so far.

Okay, that’s all I have for you today. Thanks for the question, Kerri! My purpose for the Friday Focus columns are to provide resources to creative people, and I’d love to know what you guys are interested in learning more about. What would you like to see here?

One reminder before I go.
