Friday Focus: The Best Art + Design Documentaries

Happy Friday, friends! What are your plans for the weekend? I don’t think we have anything scheduled. Those can be the most fun times of all.

Just in case you’re looking for inspiration in film format this weekend, here’s a list of some of my favorite creative documentaries. I was planning to write more about each movie and why I liked them, but then I realized that this blog post would end up being an entire book. And, well…I don’t have time to write that book and you don’t have time to read it. Explore these links instead!

Charles & Ray Eames: The Architect and the Painter

Guest of Cindy Sherman  – I really hated her annoying ex-boyfriend by the time it ended.

Exit Through The Gift Shop – This movie cracked me up. Brilliant.

Bill Cunningham: New York – A true inspiration.

Helvetica

Beauty is Embarrassing – I saw this one a couple of weeks ago and it will be getting it’s own blog post very soon. Wayne White created sets for Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. That’s all I’m saying right now. Loved it.

Marina Abramović The Artist Is Present – I’ll be writing A LOT about this film and this artist in a blog post next week. Wow. AMAZING.

Okay, fine. I couldn’t be completely “silent.” Back to your coffee.

Not into these documentaries? You could go with a biographical film about an artist, writer, or creative who inspires or intrigues you.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Capote

Sylvia

Pollock

Factory Girl

Or one that isn’t at all based on reality, but still interesting to watch.

Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus

I’d love to know if you’ve seen any of these and what you thought about them. Also, do you have any recommendations for me? Let’s chat about them on Facebook or in the comments section below! I hope you have a great weekend.

P.S. I’ve been working on something with some awesome people that I’m really excited about. I’ll share more info with you on Monday. :) Okay…that’s all. For real. xoxo
