I’ve never taken a dance class, but I’ve always envied ballerinas – their grace, their figures, their COSTUMES!
When I was a little girl I would pull out my cousin’s pink satin, sequin, and tulle tutu and wriggle into it nearly every time we visited them, no matter if it fit me or not. I can’t remember how I felt when I paraded around their house in that tutu, but I’m sure it was akin to being a princess or Cinderella at the ball. At home in the privacy of my own room I’d dress up in my grandmother’s old chiffon nightgowns and twirl along with Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Sometimes I’d even convince my younger brother to join in.
I’m not sure why I never took ballet lessons. It’s probably a combination of the expense and that we were 20 to 30 miles away from the nearest dance studio. I’m sure I was as clumsy back then as I am now, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to wear those costumes.
As an adult I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about or attending ballets, even though I loveBlack SwanandBunheads. But last week, I remembered what it felt like to be a young girl seduced by the sparkle when I saw Smita Jacob’s Instagram shots as she spent the day behind the scenes watching the Boston Ballet prepare for their upcoming run of The Nutcracker.

P.S. This is what Nathaniel was wearing when I picked him up from day care one day last week. :)
