What Does Your Font Say About You?

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of all things font. Whenever I go through a blog redesign I feel like I spend a lot of time agonizing over what font I should use.

Typeface is one of the most important things in package design. If I’m trying to decide between two products that are otherwise similar I will go for the one with the nicest package, and that most likely means the one with the most awesome font.

Don’t you think they have personalities of their own?

Action Is JL: She spends a good bit of her weekend going through thrift shops looking for vintage Pyrex and the perfect retro diner-style table. Her hair is not a color that grows from a head naturally. She identifies with Judy Jetson. She and her friends throw a progressive Star Trek theme party every fall. When she was in junior high she and her BFF collected colorful shoelaces printed with alligators and ice cream cones and dreamed of starting their own sticker printing business that specialized in Duran Duran.

Princetown LET: She’s sporty. She doesn’t wear makeup. She pulls her long straight hair back into a sleek ponytail. She likes soccer. And tennis. And track. And pep rallies. The only piece of jewelry that she wears is a gold necklace with a monagrammed charm in the shape of a megaphone. She travels in packs.

Edwardian Script ITC: She’s fancy, but controlled. She’s into diamonds, satin, and furs. At least, that’s what her mother told her to be interested in. She’s polite, but there’s a slightly pained look behind the smile. She’s always felt trapped, like a bird in a cage. A very ornate cage, but a cage nonetheless. Every day she tries to open the door, but she still can’t find the key.

Akka: “Burn, baby burn, disco inferno!” Sequins. Eyeliner. Dancing. Glamour. Lots of friends and lots of smiles, most of them real. Style. Fashion. A dress for every occasion. Cheers to 24-hour parties!

Papyrus: She owns a yoga studio or an aromatherapy shop. Or both. If she has a website, it’s spare, rarely updated, and probably contains the color purple. Her jewelry jangles. She has three cats, each on their third past life. She smells like sandalwood, and owns an incense burner. She shoots wheatgrass. She loves you.

Now let’s do a fun with fonts exercise. If you have a blog, website, or company, take a look at the font. What is your font’s personality? What does it say about you? Is it friendly? Open? Quiet? Post your a link to your blog/website and your answer in the comments section!
