Girl Collage Series: Girl #1-Stella

Remember that series of Girl collages I semi-started back in September? Yeah, I didn’t think so. Well, guess what?! Last week I gathered up all of the stuff that I had made for it that had been on our dining table for months and decided to put it all together and finish it!

I’m happy with the way it turned out, but if I had just started it now I might have made it a little simpler in terms of number of colors and materials. I’m excited to do more work that doesn’t involve my iMac. I love creating digital art and working on photographs, but there’s a feeling about getting out art supplies and seeing things come to life on paper that I just can’t replicate while I’m working on my computer.

Nathaniel has inspired me to dig out a large sketchbook that I bought five years ago and hadn’t once opened. He loves drawing, so lately I’ve been working in my sketchbook while he’s creating his art. I bought the sketchbook with the intention of creating a book of collages. I thought it would be fun to work on whatever came to mind and see how my skills and interests changed over time. A big sketchbook seemed like less of a commitment than one canvas. I felt like the collages I would do wouldn’t have to be “perfect,” and I could be more spontaneous with creating them. No rules. I could do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. Funny, given my emotional space at the time it totally makes sense that I was shying away from all kinds of commitment. I just made this connection right now, five years later. :) I’ve created one collage so far. I’ll share it with you when I think it’s “finished.”

I put Girl #1-Stella on Society6, if you’re interested in purchasing a print.

Happy Tuesday! xo
