Although it seems I’ve lost my affinity for L.A.’s west side, I did visit a couple of fun shops on Abbot Kinney in Venice – Firefly and Kid Firefly.
The grown-up Firefly had some great stuff made by local artists and an awesome selection of artsy books (that I did not purchase…let me know if you need my mailing address) and magazines (that I did purchase…more on that in a sec).

Did you look at the lovely graphic I put together just for you at the beginning of this post? In it you’ll find a cool Canadian magazine called UPPERCASE. I first saw this magazine at my beloved ReForm School, but passed on it because of its $18 price tag. $18 is only six or seven cappuccinos, but it feels like a lot for a magazine.
ANYWAY…
I saw UPPERCASE again when I was in Firefly, and this time I couldn’t pass it up. Unfortunately none of the Seattle bookstores (shame on you, Elliott Bay) stock the magazine, so I looked into getting a subscription. It’s published quarterly and a U.S. subscription is $80 per year ($72 for renewals…umm…not fair, UPPERCASE…not fair). $80 for four magazines a year. That seems ridiculous. RIDICULOUS. Four really cool magazines a year. Like, SUPER cool. Sigh.*
Let’s move on to Erinn Berkson’s newest venture, Firefly Kids. This shop is full of cute clothes, great books, toys, and cool art for kids’ rooms. Our adorable fair-skinned Pacific Northwest child needed a hat to protect him from the Southern California rays and they had a super cute Zutano surfboard hat (see cool graphic at the top that I made especially for you). Perfect!
Unfortunately neither of these cool boutiques offer online shopping, so you’ll just have to stop by if you find yourself in Venice. Then go back to Silverlake.
xoxo
