Even though I’m still mad crushing on Portland, there’s always room in my overactive brain for more.
1. Rania Matar: A Girl and Her Room
When I was pregnant with Nathaniel, before I knew he was a he, I kept thinking about what it would be like to be the mother of a daughter. First I thought about all of the adorable clothes that I could buy for her. Then I thought about how great it would be to brush her long beautiful hair before I tucked her in at night. Then I thought about all the fun girly stuff we could do together. Then I thought about my hypothetical daughter turning thirteen. Then I started hyperventilating.
Teenage girls simultaneously fascinate and terrify me. Apparently, at times, they can be difficult to live with. Case in point – When I was a teenager I found this book stuck behind some other books in my mom’s collection. Important note: My parents only have one daughter.
That being said, I like teenage girls. I like talking to them and getting to know them. We even have some of the same interests. I love art, movies, TV shows, and books about teenage girls. And I love these photos that Rania Matar took of completely different, yet somehow similar, teenage girls in their natural habitat – their bedrooms.
2. Rachel Cohn
Speaking of teenage girls, I have a huge girl crush on Rachel Cohn right now. So far I’ve read Very LeFreak and Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares and loved them both.
I haven’t read Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist yet, but I really liked the movie. How can you not adore Michael Cera?
Speaking of Michael Cera, have you seen Scott Pilgrim vs. the World? Youth in Revolt? Juno? Superbad? Arrested Development? All AWESOME.
Anyway, Rachel…I ♥ you. I can’t wait to read ALL of your other books. Let me know if you want to be best friends. David Levithan, I ♥ you too, and will be reading your solo work as well.
3. FFFFOUND!
This site is awesome, and adding images to it is quite addictive. It’s a great place for inspiration and to find out about super talented and creative people. Joining the site is by invitation only, so a special shout out to my old friend Brandon at Design-O-Matic for hooking me up. Thanks KBB!
4. Going to L.A. to See MOCA’s Art in the Streets Exhibition
On a scale from “meh” to “batshit,” how crazy is it to seriously consider flying to L.A. just to hang out for the day, see this exhibit, have lunch at Real Food Daily(Please open a location here…please? And bring Arclight with you.), and fly back to Seattle? I mean, it’s only a 2 1/2 hour flight. No biggie. It would totally be worth it.
Update: Drew and Nathaniel may be on board for a three day weekend in sunny California sometime before August 8th. Then we could do even more of my favorite things in L.A.!
5. Finding New Cool Things in Seattle
Our trip to Portland last weekend really pushed my exploring bug, which is already active on my normal setting, up to super high levels. It’s so much fun to visit new places. Now I’m further exploring my own city. Drew did some research and found some new (to us) places that I might like to check out, like Schmancy (OMG…this place looks so cool!), Momo, Max & Quinn’s Atomic Boys Shop-O-Rama(with a name like this, it has to be awesome), Fireworks Gallery, Roq La Rue (also recommended by Joe at Elroy Art Agency in Portland), and Bherd Studios. I also want to go back to Assemble. I’m pretty sure that I stopped in when they opened, but it’s been a while.
Another shop/gallery on Drew’s list was Tasty, and yesterday before heading over to In the Red Wine Bar and Café, we were able to check it out. I love this shop! They have awesome stuff and Sheri, one of the owners of the shop, was so nice and seemed like so much fun. We’ve been wanting new pillows for our couch to replace the hideous ones that came with it, and Tasty had the perfect ones for us by Alise’s Pieces. Hopefully she’ll have some new stuff in her Etsy shop soon.
Unicorn’s Mane Is Actually Purpler Than It May Appear
I also got these great FrankenSocks from SockPals, a small Seattle company run by 13 year-old Jackie to help her earn money for college. She and her mom make all of the stuff, and they donate 10% of the profits to the American Cancer Society in memory of Jackie’s grandfather.
Wow. How great is everything that I just said about SockPals?
Okay, that’s it for this week. Have a great Sunday!
