You're My Obsession | May 9-May 15, 2011
Greetings, everyone!

IFG has been a little quiet over the past week because Drew, Nathaniel, and I were hanging out in St. Louis visiting family.

Now we’re back in Seattle until our next couple of jaunts in June (can’t wait to see you Los Angeles and Vancouver!) and I’m planning to update the blog more often. Yay!

Okay, stop. Obsession time. And no, MC Hammer is not on the list…this week.

1. Collecting Blogs
Guys…I read a lot of blogs. I don’t have time to read every single post on every single blog that I love every single day, but during my short bursts of time on Twitter, Feedly, and Flipboard I devour as much as I can.

One of the things I’m planning to do in my goal of more frequent IFG updating is to dedicate one blog entry a week to another blog that I love or read a lot or just found out about or think that it’s really weird/cool/pretty pretty/hilarious/awesome/useful.

There are some fantastic blogs out here on the interwebs and I’d like to start by sharing five of my favorites.

  • Flying House by Traveling Mama – I  just started reading this one recently and now I want to go back and read the archives. Photography, art, design, motherhood, nomadic lifestyle…count me in.
  • AB Chao – So weird. This person actually lives in northern Louisiana and I don’t know her (which is odd, trust me). I only know about AB/this blog from an article I read in Anthology Magazine. AB, maybe we can meet sometime when I visit Monroe!
  • Oh Joy! – A little bit of everything in one beautiful package.

2. Oliver Jeffers
Thanks to reading lots of blogs, I found out about this wonderful children’s book author and illustrator. All I did was read Swiss Miss which led me to The Post Family which led me to super talented Oliver Jeffers. Seriously, you could click and click and click all day and find so many super talented creative people in the world. I ♥ teh interwebz.

In an ideal world, I would buy every single one of his books today. But since I need money for food, baby formula, student loans, cappuccinos, cable TV, and paying off the remainder of the damage I did during my traipse around the country/shopaholic years, I thought it would be best to start with just one.

When I visited Left Bank Books in St. Louis, I picked up The Incredible Book Eating Boy. So cool.

3. Creating an Inward Facing Girl Logo
Last week I got to know ArtStudio for iPad by sketching some ideas that I have for an Inward Facing Girl logo. I’m not ready to unveil it just yet, but I think I’m getting close.

4. Submarine
The awesome love of my life recommended that I watch the trailer for Submarine. And when Mr. “Sexy Blue Eyes” Wonderful asks you to watch a trailer, you do. Eventually. I’m sorry, Sweetie! I have a baby, a blog, a job, Gossip Girl…Sweetie? Are you still there? I love you!

I watched the trailer and the movie looks hilarious. Then Drew found out that it was based on a book, so he ordered it for us. I’m only on page 16 and I’ve already laughed out loud a few times. Read the first pages at Amazon and watch this trailer. Seriously funny.

I love the book cover artwork too.

5. Organizing/Prioritizing Creative Projects (a.k.a., What I Want To Do with My Life)

You know those people who want to do creative things but can’t come up with any ideas? Well, I have the opposite of that problem. I have tons of things that I want to do and, like most people, not nearly enough time to do them all. Or even most of them.

This past week I’ve been thinking more about what I love to do and how to best organize my time so I can do these things more often. I haven’t worked out the details yet, but here’s What I Know for Sure.

  • Writing this blog makes me happy and I want to spend more time on it.
  • I have absolutely loved learning how to use Inkscape and GIMP to design the “obsession” graphics. I want to learn more about graphic design and eventually use that knowledge for some type of paid work.
  • My ideal career would combine writing, photography, graphic design, and collage art.
  • I will create an online photography portfolio this year.
  • I will use Springpad to organize and prioritize all of the creative projects (book ideas, photography projects, t-shirt designs, articles/blog posts, collages, cards, and more, I’m sure) that I want to work on.
Who needs a new year for resolutions, right?
