Last weekend Drew and I took Nathaniel to his first art exhibit. Oops…SECOND art exhibit…here’s the first one. Nick Cave’s Meet Me at the Center of the Earth is now on view at the Seattle Art Museum through June 5, 2011. If you live in Seattle, or plan to visit before June 6th, you have to see this!
Nick Cave’s quirky and beautiful Soundsuits are some of the most (if not the most) creative pieces of art I’ve ever seen.
One of my favorites – Soundsuit, 2008 – Image from Jack Shainman Gallery |
He uses different types of material in his sculptures, including sweaters, metal tops and toys, ceramic birds, potholders, and even human hair. He made his very first Soundsuit from twigs.
And if all of this isn’t cool enough on its own, get this – the Soundsuits can actually be worn! By people! Who dance in them! Each piece is designed to make its own distinct sound.
Another Favorite – Untitled, 2009 – Image from Jack Shainman Gallery |
While it was so cool to see them as a static display, seeing them in motion would be truly incredible. There will be several “invasions” of the city while the exhibition is in Seattle and I hope I get to experience one. A scheduled Soundsuit performance will be happening at the Olympic Sculpture Park on Earth Day, Saturday April 16th.
