The Stuff White People Like blog (and book) have been around since 2008. Since I just got around to buying the book (and Christian Lander’s newest book that was released in November 2010), I had to write about it. Note: If you ever find yourself in Bellingham, you should go to Village Books. Great store.
When I first started reading the blog a few years ago, I was cracking up at how spot-on and hilarious it was. Note: It’s important for the type of white people that Lander is making fun of to let everyone know that they were aware of cool stuff from the beginning – or even better, before the cool book/movie/blog/band/art was ever conceived.
Obviously Lander isn’t satirizing all types of white people. He’s going for the left wing, predominantly city dwellers that eat organic food that they’ve purchased from farmer’s markets or Whole Foods/grocery co-ops, enjoy film festivals and Wes Anderson movies, read David Sedaris, listen to indie music, and are obsessed with Apple products, kitchen gadgets, and breakfast places. Have I just described myself and many of my friends? Yes.
Of course I don’t fit into all the categories. I don’t hate my parents, desire to run a marathon, or want to go to Wrigley Field. But one of the worst is not having a TV. That’s a notion I would never get behind. Hello, you can find out about new cool stuff to like on TV.
Now I must leave you. I have to get ready to go to breakfast at a new agey Seattle vegetarian restaurant. Seriously.
