A couple of months ago Drew and I took a day trip up to Bellingham and we visited the new Lightcatcher Building, part of the Whatcom Museum. While we were there, we saw their two cool inaugural exhibits – a multimedia contemporary art exhibit titled Out of Bounds and an awesome installation by John Grade called Bloom: The Elephant Bed.
If you can make it to Bellingham before these exhibits end, it will be a worthwhile trip. Out of Bounds only runs through March 21, but Bloom (my favorite of the two) doesn’t end until April 10. The sculptures are constantly evolving. They’re being lowered into a pool of black water where they begin to dissolve. On April 10, the remaining pieces will be paraded through town then tossed into Bellingham Bay where they will complete their journey.
If you’re interested and want to see more, take a look at the Projects section of John Grade’s website. Click on the last project (located on the bottom right) and you can see the photos that were taken when he did this same installation last year in Brighton, UK.
